I find myself sitting on the fence when it comes to reciprocal links. Once upon a time, a reciprocal link campaign was the most popular way of building links. You exchange links with another website and you both benefit. They do still have their place, if you can negotiate a well placed link on a relevant website with a lot of traffic. However, in terms of SEO, reciprocal links are known to have been devalued by the search engines. Consider every reciprocal link opportunity based on its own merit and, in most cases, ignoring the search engine optimization possibilities.
Don't Spam Blogs And Forums
Above, we have detailed a couple of link building methods that include posting on forums and blogs. Please, don't spam. Spam is the scourge of the online world and something that every site owner could do without. Spamming will make you unpopular, may get your site delisted, and it sure won't make you any friends.

Avoid These 7 Link Building Mistakes

Everywhere you look today, there's some SEO Guru trying to tell you what to do and what not to do when building links. It's no secret that SEO experts agree on very little. A recent survey at SEOMoz proved that point.

If the top SEO experts around the World can not come to an agreement about what should or should not be done when building links, then what is the every day Joe supposed to do?

Rand surveyed the Top 37 SEO experts in the World. Basically the Survey is a series of questions asked to each expert. This group of experts could not come up with an agreement rating more than 1 on many of the questions!

So now that we know the experts can't agree, I might as well tell you the mistakes I've made plus the ones I see done by many Webmasters.

Failing to procure reciprocal links. I've seen so called SEO Guru's say that reciprocal linking is dead and they will hurt your site. This just isn't so. The important thing to remember is to make sure they links your trade are from quality sites. It doesn't matter if they're PR0, just make sure they're not from a spam/adult/pharmacy/hate type site. Reciprocal links can be on a resource page if you run a website or a Blogroll for you bloggers. Just remember to trade!

Failing to acquire low PR links. For some reason, many Webmasters do not want PR0 sites linking to them. This is link building suicide! One day, those PR0 sites could be the next PR5 or better. Frankly, I don't care who links to my sites. I can't control it and if they're passing any amount of authority, which even PR0 pass some, I'll take it. It also looks natural when you have many more low authority sites pointing to your site than all high PR sites.

Failing to link out. Once again, we're talking about making your site look natural to the Search Engines, especially Google. Authority sites link out to other authority sites. Google expects to see this. I can't tell you how many times Ive had a site stuck in the SERPS only to get a little boost when I linked to a higher authority site. So link out to authority sites!

Failure to check your reciprocal link partners websites. Once you exchange links with someone, you need to follow up on a routine basis and make sure the link back to your site is still there. Some sites go down, accounts are closed, domains let expired and purchased by someone else, Webmasters changing website topics and some Webmasters simply taking your link down after you exchange links. I've seen people put the "nofollow" attribute on the links after they've made a trade. I've seen it all happen, that's why I monitor my link partners and you should also.

Failing to use Anchor text in your link. If someone gives you the opportunity to use Anchor text in the link back to your site, use it! In my opinion, anchor text in a backlink is the second biggest off page ranking factor for seo. Only the relevancy and authority of the page where the backlink originates is more important in my experience.

Failing to cover up your paid link footprints. Look, from here to the end of time, people will sell links. And from here to the end of time, Google will be trying to find paid links. And from here to the end of time, you'll see blogs, websites and blog networks (think Backlink Solutions) get de indexed for selling links. If you're going to buy or sell links, you'd better be hiding your footprint or Big Daddy G is going to find you one dark, cold and stormy night. There are several ways of hiding your footprint, I covered one way in my link laundering article a few weeks ago.

Failing to build links. I see people on the forums all the time asking how they should go about link building or how to get started link building. Many say they don't know how and so they don't even try. People! I hate link building as much as the next person, but it's not Rocket Science. You may be able to rank high in a low competitive keyword niche with on-page SEO, but for a competitive niche where's there's money to be made, you're going to need some relevant backlinks!

TIP: One of the most effective link building strategies you can perform is to find out who's linking to your competition and get links from them. You simply go to Google and type in link:yourcompetitorssite,com. You'll then get a list of sites that are linking to your competitors site. Browse that site to see if there is a place to put a link to your own site at. If not, simply Contact the person running the site and ask kindly for a link. Many times they will not respond, but some will. Now, out of those sites, do the same thing. See who's linking to them and get links from those sites!

This is probably the easiest way to get relevant backlinks but it's a technique very few Bloggers and Webmasters use!

Once you have submitted your site to the major search engines and directories (and if your meta tags were properly written) the best action would be to wait. Time is on your side.

The importance of backlinks is often not fully appreciated by the website owners or webmasters. When making changes to your website for Search Engine Optimization for good ranking on the major search engine such as Google, Yahoo or MSN, there are different factors that you should look at.

How can you increase traffic to your website? There are many ways to do this, but link building is one of the most effective, maybe even THE most effective.

So then what is internet link building?

Basically, it hinges on the idea of creating what are called BACKLINKS. This term is used to denote any links TO your website FROM another website. These can be very useful to you in a variety of ways. First, they can give you a lot of free traffic, particularly if the backlink is from a website that itself has a lot of visitors. Secondly, the search engines tend to take more notice of sites that have a number in inbound links across the internet. There are other benefits but these two are the principal ones, at least from the point of view of making money online.

That's fine, but how can you get people to put links to your website?

Well, you can't simply ask someone to put a link to you on their site can you? The answer to that, strange though it may seem, is that you sometimes can do just that. Ask! It is amazing how many of us do not adopt this very simple and often effective action. So ask a website owner to exchange links with you. What have you got to lose? If they say no, or ignore you, you are still where you were before. But they might just say yes.

Another way is to browse through the websites or blogs written by other people, and if you find an article or piece that interests you and comments are enabled, leave a comment. Make sure to include a link to your site or your site url as a signature. This is a widely acceptable practice, and would not be considered to be spamming, as long as you do not try to put too many links in your comment.

A third way is to write articles on your own blog that are interesting enough for a few people to notice, who then may well link to you. Incidentally, do not be afraid to be controversial. We have found that a strongly held opinion can actually cause others to link to your site, since your opinion will provoke discussion. Even people who oppose you will link to your site. This is a good illustration of the old saying, there is no such thing as bad publicity.

The fourth way I want to look at here is perhaps the most powerful, and that is what is known as article marketing. If you look around, you will find many sites now that accept articles for free publication, and allow you to include a backlink to your site. These free article websites generate very high traffic volumes, so if your article is accepted by them, your article and your link will be seen by a lot of readers.

These sites have certain minimum standards of acceptability for an article, but you do not have to be a great writer. You should find that if you have something to say, and you can express it in reasonably good, grammatical language, your article will be accepted. The traffic to your website will follow.

Finally, one thing to remember above all. The above techniques require PATIENCE. Do not expect instant success from them, as many have done and failed as a result. It may take a little time for the traffic to build when you try these methods, but when it does come, it will be solid traffic.

Link Building, simply enough is the process of getting links from other websites to point at your site.

This is the way that Google and other Search Engines, such as Yahoo, MSN, ASK, etc assess the popularity of a particular website. Much in the same way that an election works, so does linking; the person with the most votes wins. The website with the most links pointing at it gets the highest in the search engine rankings, or SERPs. (Search Engine Results Pages).

Larry Page and Serge Brin; the founders of Google, devised a special way of counting all these links, called PageRank. PageRank is the basis of Google and how it works. The maths and science behind pagerank, is quite complicated, but in a nutshell, it is an algorythmn that calculates all the links on the Internet. It then gives a score to a webpage, based on the amount of links that website page is receiving. It works by both assessing the links to that webpage and from that webpage. A link to a webpage is called a backlink. But be aware all links are not the same.

This is a very important point to remember when link building. For example: If I have 10 links pointing at a webpage and 1 link from that webpage, that one link is going to be very powerful. If I have 1 link to a webpage and 10 links from that webpage, those 10 links will not be very powerful.

Have a look at the pagerank toolbar from Google. You can add this to your google toolbar. Although it is not very accurate, (Google for trade reasons will never give a completely accurate picture) it is a fantastic way of assess the value of the link you are getting. The pagerank tool gives a score from 1 to 10 of the importance of that website. (how many links it has pointing at it) No one knows if this is entirely accurate apart from the people at Google, but it will show you how the pagerank score is created.

It is always best to get links from webpages with a highpage rank. For example if you got the BBC (which has a pagerank of 9) to link to your website from their home page - your job as an SEO would probably be over! This is because the BBC website is one of the best websites on the Internet. It has hundreds of thousands of links, thousands of pages with unique well written content.

It is nearly impossible to get links from pages with a pagerank over 6, because of the value of these links. A good rule of thumb is never bother with webpages with a pagerank of 0. The best you are likely to get is 1-3. In my experience the best I have every got is a 6, but this took a lot of wrangling, trading, exchanging my own links.

Pagerank only works as a guide to getting links. Sometimes a website is waiting to have a pagerank score added to it. If you think the website looks good, is related to yours and could be valuable resource - get the link anyway!
