It's Time to Think Links

Author: STRAIGHTALK

New Website? It's Time To Think Links Link building has long been the staple dietary topic for SEO and Internet marketing experts, but with good reason. This is hardly ground breaking news but having a powerful link profile will help you to rank well in the search engines. Having an especially powerful link profile will also drive traffic directly to your website.
As the webmaster of a new site, there are several things you must do. First, you need to create a genuinely useful website filled with equally useful and informative content. You need to ready yourself to add fresh content on a frequent basis, in order to retain existing site visitors and to attract the search engine spiders. You also need to start building links – a good link profile takes time to develop so it is essential that you start as soon as possible. Below are some of the more and less effective methods of building quality inbound links to your new website.
Create Quality Content
OK, we've already mentioned this in passing, but it's important. Linkable content will get linked to (eventually). You may not have the traffic base to command links organically in this way yet, but you will do soon. Unique, informative, and even controversial content will ultimately see other sites willing to link to your own.
Video marketing has become especially popular because of its viral nature. You can create a good video clip, embed it into a page of your site and include "email to a friend" links. Also ensure that it is well branded so that everybody knows where the video first came from.
Free Directory Submissions
You should submit your site to a lot of web directories over time. If your domain is brand new then you should attempt to limit the amount of submissions you make in the first month. Google is believed to penalize sites that build too many links too quickly in this way. However, free directories can take days, weeks, or even months before they get round to accepting your submission so do start early.
As well as general category directories for your search engine link profile, you should research industry specific directories. These will also help your search engine ranking, but they can drive excellent levels of targeted traffĂc to your site. Consider paying some of the bigger and more influential directories for an annual submission.
Paid Directory Submissions
Free directories typically only allow you to link to the main page of your website, but most also allow you to choose the title of your link. This gives you the opportunity to build your links according to your keywords, which is an essential component of link building for search engine rankings. Paid directories, on the other hand, also usually allow deep linking to individual pages of your website.
Join Forums And Post Relevant Comments
Forums are, in reality, becoming less popular. The advent of the oft discussed web 2.0 means that the forum is seen as something of a dying trend. However, a lot of people do still use them and they do offer the opportunity to garner your website with some traffic and provide you with signature links.
Join forums that are relevant to your industry, create a signature link using your more important keywords and then browse. Find topics that genuinely interest you, or areas where you can offer assistance. Post comments, without linking to your site, and rely on your signature link to do the rest. If you provide genuine, helpful information then you may find that you pick up some very interested leads along the way.
Request Links
You don't get anything if you don't ask. Find relevant websites, though not in direct competition to your own site, and request a link. Point out a particularly useful section of your website content that is easily linkable and offer the HTML code to provide a link.
This isn't, in all honesty, the best way to spend your linking time. It can take many attempts with various websites before you get an acceptance and a link to your site. Webmasters will usually link to sites they have genuinely found themselves, or else sell their advertising spaces. Alternatively, they may only link to other sites within their own network.
Tagging And Social Bookmarking
So, you've read all about social bookmarking and tagging, but don't know how it can help your site? Well, the principle is fairly simple – join the social bookmarking sites, create a list of useful sites including one or two of your own, and then publish them. Some search engines are known to be particularly fond of using links found in this way. Also, if your list is genuinely useful then you should find some traffic diverts to your own site as a result.
Blog Commenting
Find blogs that are relevant to your industry and your site and sign up. Most blogs provide the opportunity to link to your site via your name so pick a name that includes relevant keywords. Like forums, only post relevant content and comments. Answers like "me too" do not count. If you don't have something valuable to add, then don't add anything, and move on to the next link building venture, please!
Article Syndication
Write articles, or have them written for you, and submit them to syndication websites. GoArticles and EzineArticles are among the more popular syndication sites and the article pages typically rank well. You have the opportunity to include two biographical links with most article directories, and these should point to the relevant pages on your site and include keywords as the anchor text.
Article syndication is a very good method of building links, but only if you can create article content that is appealing to visitors and to webmasters. However, one good article could generate many links and hundreds or even thousands of visitors to your website.
Offer Content To Other Sites
This is similar, although more specific, than article syndication. Contact webmasters of websites that operate in the same industry as you. Offer unique content in exchange for a link or links to your website. Again, if you can write well, then you shouldn't find it too difficult to find an avenue for publication of your work.
A lot of sites actively look for submissions in this way, so keep an eye out when you are next browsing the web.
Press Release Submissions
Press releases have been around a long time, and are still going fairly strong online. Again, press releases offer the opportunity to drive interested traffic to your website and some PR wires allow authors to include links to their website. PRLeap and PRWeb are among two of the more popular and beneficial sites to submit your PR to.
Reciprocal Links
I find myself sitting on the fence when it comes to reciprocal links. Once upon a time, a reciprocal link campaign was the most popular way of building links. You exchange links with another website and you both benefit. They do still have their place, if you can negotiate a well placed link on a relevant website with a lot of traffic. However, in terms of SEO, reciprocal links are known to have been devalued by the search engines. Consider every reciprocal link opportunity based on its own merit and, in most cases, ignoring the search engine optimization possibilities.
Don't Spam Blogs And Forums
Above, we have detailed a couple of link building methods that include posting on forums and blogs. Please, don't spam. Spam is the scourge of the online world and something that every site owner could do without. Spamming will make you unpopular, may get your site delisted, and it sure won't make you any friends.
Don't Use FFA Link Farms
A FFA (Free For All) website enables any website owner to place their link on a web page. Don't do it. Search engines despise this practice and you will not gain any benefit in any way from the use of this kind of site.
Avoid Any Dubious Link Building Practice
If you see a link building opportunity that looks dodgy, ignore it. At best you will waste your time, but at worst your site could be penalized and you may never be able to recover. If it looks too good to be true... you know the rest.

Avoid These 7 Link Building Mistakes

Author: Bill Miller

Everywhere you look today, there's some SEO Guru trying to tell you what to do and what not to do when building links. It's no secret that SEO experts agree on very little. A recent survey at SEOMoz proved that point.

If the top SEO experts around the World can not come to an agreement about what should or should not be done when building links, then what is the every day Joe supposed to do?

Rand surveyed the Top 37 SEO experts in the World. Basically the Survey is a series of questions asked to each expert. This group of experts could not come up with an agreement rating more than 1 on many of the questions!

So now that we know the experts can't agree, I might as well tell you the mistakes I've made plus the ones I see done by many Webmasters.

Failing to procure reciprocal links. I've seen so called SEO Guru's say that reciprocal linking is dead and they will hurt your site. This just isn't so. The important thing to remember is to make sure they links your trade are from quality sites. It doesn't matter if they're PR0, just make sure they're not from a spam/adult/pharmacy/hate type site. Reciprocal links can be on a resource page if you run a website or a Blogroll for you bloggers. Just remember to trade!

Failing to acquire low PR links. For some reason, many Webmasters do not want PR0 sites linking to them. This is link building suicide! One day, those PR0 sites could be the next PR5 or better. Frankly, I don't care who links to my sites. I can't control it and if they're passing any amount of authority, which even PR0 pass some, I'll take it. It also looks natural when you have many more low authority sites pointing to your site than all high PR sites.

Failing to link out. Once again, we're talking about making your site look natural to the Search Engines, especially Google. Authority sites link out to other authority sites. Google expects to see this. I can't tell you how many times Ive had a site stuck in the SERPS only to get a little boost when I linked to a higher authority site. So link out to authority sites!

Failure to check your reciprocal link partners websites. Once you exchange links with someone, you need to follow up on a routine basis and make sure the link back to your site is still there. Some sites go down, accounts are closed, domains let expired and purchased by someone else, Webmasters changing website topics and some Webmasters simply taking your link down after you exchange links. I've seen people put the "nofollow" attribute on the links after they've made a trade. I've seen it all happen, that's why I monitor my link partners and you should also.

Failing to use Anchor text in your link. If someone gives you the opportunity to use Anchor text in the link back to your site, use it! In my opinion, anchor text in a backlink is the second biggest off page ranking factor for seo. Only the relevancy and authority of the page where the backlink originates is more important in my experience.

Failing to cover up your paid link footprints. Look, from here to the end of time, people will sell links. And from here to the end of time, Google will be trying to find paid links. And from here to the end of time, you'll see blogs, websites and blog networks (think Backlink Solutions) get de indexed for selling links. If you're going to buy or sell links, you'd better be hiding your footprint or Big Daddy G is going to find you one dark, cold and stormy night. There are several ways of hiding your footprint, I covered one way in my link laundering article a few weeks ago.

Failing to build links. I see people on the forums all the time asking how they should go about link building or how to get started link building. Many say they don't know how and so they don't even try. People! I hate link building as much as the next person, but it's not Rocket Science. You may be able to rank high in a low competitive keyword niche with on-page SEO, but for a competitive niche where's there's money to be made, you're going to need some relevant backlinks!

TIP: One of the most effective link building strategies you can perform is to find out who's linking to your competition and get links from them. You simply go to Google and type in link:yourcompetitorssite, com. You'll then get a list of sites that are linking to your competitors site. Browse that site to see if there is a place to put a link to your own site at. If not, simply Contact the person running the site and ask kindly for a link. Many times they will not respond, but some will. Now, out of those sites, do the same thing. See who's linking to them and get links from those sites!

This is probably the easiest way to get relevant backlinks but it's a technique very few Bloggers and Webmasters use!

Seven Must-Read Reasons to Use Directory Submissions

By Hayi Mansoor

If you're wondering whether or not to use directory submissions for your site, here are seven of the best facts and reasons to give your plans the green light.

One-Way Links

Inbound links are important for higher search engine rankings. When you submit your site, they include a one-way link back to your site. However, you don't have to provide a link to the directory on yours so the search engines don't view this as a link exchange.

Improved Search Engine Visibility

We all know that search engines are important but many people don't know that by including your web site in directories you'll be increasing its visibility to the search engines which are going to be ranking it and making it easily available to millions of online users.

Regular Indexing

With a directory, your site is going to be indexed more frequently. That means search engine crawlers are going to be more likely to see it and to report on changes. Those changes can help boost your rankings.

Targeted Traffic

A number of the directories that accept submissions also focus on specific categories which means you can bring targeted traffic to your site through these listings. Targeted traffic is a good idea because it means it is more likely to result in conversions.

Choose Your Own Anchor Text

When you submit your links, you are allowed to choose the site title (not the URL) which can contain any keywords you want to use. Then the directory will generate the text you need based on those keywords which help your overall SEO.

Most are Free

The majority of directories don't charge anything for submissions. A tiny minority does have expensive fees but most do not.

Categories Send You Traffic You Want

Because your site will be classified under a specific category, you'll be more likely to be found by an audience interested in specifically what you have on your site. That's going to be better for business.

Link Building Requires Patience

We have said it before on this blog, and we are probably going to say it again a lot of times. Link building is a very effective way of ensuring success in your internet business. We believe it is a strategy that you should spend some time perfecting.

Something else we have said before, but this will also take being repeated. Link building requires patience and determination. Don't give up half-way.

In the following post, Jeff Alderson takes you through some simple strategies to ensure success in link building.

Simple Strategies For Link Building

The key to success for your online Internet business is link building. This may sound like a bold statement, but it's true.

You see, search engines like Google have webcrawlers that scour the 'Net indexing websites, and they reward websites that have a lot of links pointing to them from other websites. The more times a website is linked to online, the more the webcrawler assumes that website must be important to those searching for its relevant keyword phrases.

And that means the higher up in the search engine results they will appear, resulting in more targeted website traffic and more profits!

So, what can you do to effectively build links that stand the test of time and produce solid results? Well, there are some simple, yet extremely powerful strategies that people are using right now, and you should do so too.

For one thing, write articles and then publish them at article directories like EzineArticles and GoArticles. These articles will include a link to your website. Other webmasters can republish your articles on their website, thus generating more links for you!

These days, people also use social bookmarking to bookmark articles that they like, and every social bookmarking by a different person counts as another link. Plus, you should socially bookmark all of your own articles, too. A few of the top social bookmarking websites include StumbleUpon, Ma.gnolia, and BuddyMarks.

Another thing to do for highly-effective link building is to add other relevant but non-competitor websites links to your own link page, and then e-mail that website (or blog) administrator and ask for a link in return. Most are delighted to reciprocate. Try swapping links with at least 5 people a week, and you will be very pleased within a few short months.

Next, you should visit forums that are relevant to your product or service. Become a member and start making lots of relevant, entertaining, exciting, useful, but NOT shamelessly self-promoting posts. Using your signature, include a link back to your website with every post.

Not only does every post get you another link back, but when people at those forums realize how generous, personable, and informative you are, they'll be more likely to visit your website, which can generate a steady stream of free targeted traffic.

Also, make your links anchor text links whenever possible. This means instead of just using your URL, you use the keyword phrase you are targeting for the text of your hyperlink. Mix and match a few variations on different forums to make it look more natural.

Lastly, you should also constantly monitor your websites link popularity and the link popularity of your competitors. You can use the online Internet sites Marketleap and Alexa, respectively, for these purposes. Happy link building!

What Exactly Is Link Building?

How can you increase traffic to your website? There are many ways to do this, but link building is one of the most effective, maybe even THE most effective.

So then what is internet link building?

Basically, it hinges on the idea of creating what are called BACKLINKS. This term is used to denote any links TO your website FROM another website. These can be very useful to you in a variety of ways. First, they can give you a lot of free traffic, particularly if the backlink is from a website that itself has a lot of visitors. Secondly, the search engines tend to take more notice of sites that have a number in inbound links across the internet. There are other benefits but these two are the principal ones, at least from the point of view of making money online.

That's fine, but how can you get people to put links to your website?

Well, you can't simply ask someone to put a link to you on their site can you? The answer to that, strange though it may seem, is that you sometimes can do just that. Ask! It is amazing how many of us do not adopt this very simple and often effective action. So ask a website owner to exchange links with you. What have you got to lose? If they say no, or ignore you, you are still where you were before. But they might just say yes.

Another way is to browse through the websites or blogs written by other people, and if you find an article or piece that interests you and comments are enabled, leave a comment. Make sure to include a link to your site or your site url as a signature. This is a widely acceptable practice, and would not be considered to be spamming, as long as you do not try to put too many links in your comment.

A third way is to write articles on your own blog that are interesting enough for a few people to notice, who then may well link to you. Incidentally, do not be afraid to be controversial. We have found that a strongly held opinion can actually cause others to link to your site, since your opinion will provoke discussion. Even people who oppose you will link to your site. This is a good illustration of the old saying, there is no such thing as bad publicity.

The fourth way I want to look at here is perhaps the most powerful, and that is what is known as article marketing. If you look around, you will find many sites now that accept articles for free publication, and allow you to include a backlink to your site. These free article websites generate very high traffic volumes, so if your article is accepted by them, your article and your link will be seen by a lot of readers.

These sites have certain minimum standards of acceptability for an article, but you do not have to be a great writer. You should find that if you have something to say, and you can express it in reasonably good, grammatical language, your article will be accepted. The traffic to your website will follow.

Finally, one thing to remember above all. The above techniques require PATIENCE. Do not expect instant success from them, as many have done and failed as a result. It may take a little time for the traffic to build when you try these methods, but when it does come, it will be solid traffic.

What is Link Building?

By Fred Dinbar

Link Building, simply enough is the process of getting links from other websites to point at your site.

This is the way that Google and other Search Engines, such as Yahoo, MSN, ASK, etc assess the popularity of a particular website. Much in the same way that an election works, so does linking; the person with the most votes wins. The website with the most links pointing at it gets the highest in the search engine rankings, or SERPs. (Search Engine Results Pages).

Larry Page and Serge Brin; the founders of Google, devised a special way of counting all these links, called PageRank. PageRank is the basis of Google and how it works. The maths and science behind pagerank, is quite complicated, but in a nutshell, it is an algorythmn that calculates all the links on the Internet. It then gives a score to a webpage, based on the amount of links that website page is receiving. It works by both assessing the links to that webpage and from that webpage. A link to a webpage is called a backlink. But be aware all links are not the same.

This is a very important point to remember when link building. For example: If I have 10 links pointing at a webpage and 1 link from that webpage, that one link is going to be very powerful. If I have 1 link to a webpage and 10 links from that webpage, those 10 links will not be very powerful.

Have a look at the pagerank toolbar from Google. You can add this to your google toolbar. Although it is not very accurate, (Google for trade reasons will never give a completely accurate picture) it is a fantastic way of assess the value of the link you are getting. The pagerank tool gives a score from 1 to 10 of the importance of that website. (how many links it has pointing at it) No one knows if this is entirely accurate apart from the people at Google, but it will show you how the pagerank score is created.

It is always best to get links from webpages with a highpage rank. For example if you got the BBC (which has a pagerank of 9) to link to your website from their home page - your job as an SEO would probably be over! This is because the BBC website is one of the best websites on the Internet. It has hundreds of thousands of links, thousands of pages with unique well written content.

It is nearly impossible to get links from pages with a pagerank over 6, because of the value of these links. A good rule of thumb is never bother with webpages with a pagerank of 0. The best you are likely to get is 1-3. In my experience the best I have every got is a 6, but this took a lot of wrangling, trading, exchanging my own links.

Pagerank only works as a guide to getting links. Sometimes a website is waiting to have a pagerank score added to it. If you think the website looks good, is related to yours and could be valuable resource - get the link anyway!

Link Building That Works

By James Schramko

Making link-building work for you is crucial and getting it done right, right from the start can save heartache down the line. Proper link building can increase your search engine ranking, and also influence the way visitors to your site, and customers, view your business.

If this weren't stressful enough, failing to place links in the way that search engine prefer, and the chances are that your entire site is will be relegated to the "also ran" category of any listing.

Fortunately when you use a good website building program, learning how to make link building work for you is actually a semi automated process. This is a revolutionary website building program that permits even the code-challenged webmaster to create stunning pages and sites that are not only professional in look and feel, but also so well set up that search engines consistently rank them at the top of the listings!

Usually you need to pay extra to get this kind of service, but with the best software you get it standard.

Whether you are an experienced webmaster or a first-time site builder, using this program is a breeze.

In real life it would be next to impossible to keep in mind all the changing rules and regulations search engines impose on webmasters, but with the software package the guesswork is eliminated.

Alerting you to unprofitable linking options and highlighting good matches, you will be ahead of the curve when it comes to high impact web design.

Being able to make link building work for you will depend on whether you are able to keep a close eye on broken links - a search engine 'red light' that might cost you in your website's rankings. Once again the software package comes to the rescue and keeping taps on links and possible programming errors is made easier than ever before.

Thus far it was virtually impossible to do so unless you were willing to invest in a secondary software package that would spot-check your sites at predetermined intervals.

With great software link pages are created in a snap and therein lay the tricks to unbeatable search engine rankings: adding keyword rich content via links that propel individual pages and entire websites to the top of the rankings.

It is not a time consuming process but instead can be done virtually instantaneously and in a very short period of time.

Should you ever notice that your site fails to perform as well as you are expecting, this is the quickest and simplest way to perform a speedy fix until you can spend some time on a site update.

Proper link building influences the way visitors to your site will view your business and how they navigate around your site. Getting it right is crucial to any successful internet marketing campaign.

Freshen Up Your Links

by Ron Porter

It may be impossible to over-emphasize the importance of links to the fiscal health of any web-based business or Internet marketing strategy. Links are like the capillaries connecting a website to the Internet, carrying the life-blood of e-commerce. To appreciate the importance of links, it is helpful to begin with a basic understanding of exactly how links function. In the simplest definition possible, links are the Internet tools that allow users pretty much anywhere to access resources on a computer someplace else. Of course, there are a wide variety of resources to which a link can connect, most of which contain some kind of data.

Data resources can comprise a wide variety of programs and files from a wide range of media, and these data files make up pretty much the entire landscape of the World Wide Web, for they represent what users interpret as the face of the Internet – web pages. Those web pages result from data resources streaming to a computer via the connections of the Internet. Data resources can be stored in a variety of ways on computers hosting web sites, but the most important thing is that the data is immediately available to a web browser that seeks it. That is where the ever-important link comes in. Links interconnect all those millions of web pages into a communications network, providing a means whereby individuals are able to tap into the resources they are looking for, often searching for.

So the key to exchanging the proper kind of data with potential customers or even the random web browser is all in the system of links one settles on. Since it’s inception as a world-wide social phenomenon, the Internet has relied on the fact that it is user-friendly for its extensive popularity. And the Internet continues to become ever more user friendly. In short, to use the Internet, one does not have to be particularly tech-savvy, and this means that users tend to click on links that offer immediate results, a way for them quickly and logically bounce around in cyberspace.

Anyone who wants to enjoy the full benefits of the Internet is likely going to rely on links to navigate their way to the sites that are related to their interests. The placement of links is a key to attracting traffic, but that also leads to one of the most common pitfalls associated with links – bad links that go either nowhere at all, or take a user someplace that they did not really want to visit. Once a customer clicks on a link on your site that takes them to the wrong place in the cyber world, that customer may never come back again. To keep people coming back, make sure you freshen up your links.

To appreciate the importance of links, it is helpful to begin with a basic understanding of exactly how links function. Ron E. Porter says here about the key factors to focus on while going for the techniques to put proper links at proper places to attract more and more customers thereby achieving the objective of Web Traffic Monetization.

Link it and link it good!

by Nikki Lee

The most important part of Search Engine Optimization is Link Building. Building quality links for your website needs a lot of work, you will need to participate in forums, create articles, create Blogs, submit your link to directory websites, create ads that would interest your targeted market and submit it to classified ad websites, and make Press Releases.

For Internet Marketers or SEO’s, link building would be considered the most time-consuming and commonly frustrating, however, it is the basis on whether the site would be successful or not. The goals of link building are centered on improving the visibility, reach & accessibility of web content. Since links are the web's primary system for directing traffic; the marketer's or Seo’s focus must be to improve their ability to drive that traffic. Credibility, visibility and direction for the targeted audience are created by these links.

In link building, Anchor text would be one factor that should be considered. Anchor text is the actual text that visitors click on to follow a link. A great anchor text would be something that a searcher would recognize easily or something that is enticing. In addition, proper usage of an anchor text can help you show the search engines how relevant your pages are. We all know that search engines would love to show relevant pages, hence, properly using an anchor text would help your site rank.

In line with Anchor text, another factor that should be considered is the intention of your link. You should always keep in mind how would a search engine view your link’s value to searchers, would this link page help the searcher find he/she truly needs? If it’s a link signifying you as a source or a reference on a specific topic, the relevance is high. However, if it’s a link influenced by a less trustworthy motivations, search engines will definitely not value your link. How Press Releases Support Search Engine Marketing

by John Rasco

Press releases are becoming more and more important to your search engine optimization strategy. Many people prefer to view them online as a source of information instead of newspapers and trade publications, especially in the technical field.

Online audiences are increasingly in control of the messages they see, and will filter out a lot of advertising and publications perceived as irrelevant. Plus, it's still true that PR carries more credibility than advertising.

Increase traffic and link building

A good press release strategy can help increase site traffic and bring in new leads as effectively as other SEO tactics. An interesting, well-written press release can "stick" on web sites for a good long time, creating valuable publicity and interest in the source.

When your release is picked up by a relevant web site, it creates an important link back to your site. This can help boost search engine rankings. So press releases are a good strategy for your link building efforts.

Know your keywords and your audience

It is critical to include carefully-researched keywords in the copy--and especially the headline--to be sure you have an optimized release. It is also important to designate keywords and take advantage of available RSS feeds when posting the release to sites such as PRWeb (www.prweb.com).

It is more important than ever to identify and understand your target audience. This will make decisions about optimization and distribution of the release much easier and more effective, and can increase your relevance to the search engines.

Use your newsroom

As soon as it has been released, you can add important content to your site by placing each release in your site's newsroom (if you don't have a newsroom, create one soon) It can also help to place the headline with a link to the newsroom on your home page. You might automate this process. And keep your releases up to date! A prospect doesn't get a positive first impression from a Latest News item dated 2006.

Take advantage of blogs

It is also important to post the release to your blog and include the keywords in the post title. This also increases relevance and visibility. The number of people using blogs as a source of news is quickly increasing, and this will place your news in front of them. A good press release increases the likelihood of attracting the attention of people who write news stories because journalists are heavy readers of good news blogs.

Give them a reason to visit

It may help to include a specific reason in the release for the reader to visit your site, and make it easy with imbedded links. For example, RefreshWeb client Clifford Law Offices (www.cliffordlaw.com) includes a summary introduction to free legal articles in a press release, and includes a link to make it simple to visit their site and finish the article.
